If your Vueling flight arrived more than 3 hours late, you may be entitled to compensation of up to €600 under EU law — and getting that money from the airline is your legal right, not a favour. Vueling is Spain's largest low-cost carrier and a subsidiary of IAG (the same group that owns British Airways and Iberia), operating over 140 destinations primarily from its Barcelona El Prat (BCN) hub. As a Spanish EU-registered airline, Vueling is fully subject to EU Regulation EC 261/2004.

Delays from Barcelona are particularly common during summer — peak season brings overcrowding at BCN, thunderstorms over the Mediterranean, and high aircraft rotation pressure on Vueling's fleet.

When Does Vueling Owe You Compensation?

All four conditions must be met for your claim to be valid:

1. Your flight arrived at least 3 hours late — measured from when the aircraft doors open at the destination. A late takeoff that makes up time in the air may fall below the threshold.

2. The flight falls under EU jurisdiction — either:

  • The flight departed from an EU/EEA airport (virtually all Vueling routes qualify), OR
  • The flight arrived in the EU operated by Vueling

3. You held a confirmed, paid booking — a valid reservation in Vueling's system. Points bookings and package holidays are also covered.

4. You checked in on time — missing the check-in deadline invalidates the claim.

Compensation is not owed when the delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances: severe weather, ATC strikes, airport security alerts, or political events beyond the airline's control. Technical failures are not extraordinary circumstances — courts consistently rule that Vueling's aircraft maintenance is the airline's own responsibility.

How Much Compensation Can You Claim from Vueling?

Amounts are fixed by EC 261/2004 and depend on flight distance:

Flight Distance Compensation
Up to 1,500 km €250
1,500–3,500 km €400
Over 3,500 km €600

Examples of Vueling routes and typical compensation:

  • Barcelona – Madrid (~505 km) → €250
  • Barcelona – Paris (~1,035 km) → €250
  • Barcelona – Amsterdam (~1,640 km) → €400
  • Barcelona – Rome (~1,380 km) → €250
  • Barcelona – London (~1,140 km) → €250
  • Barcelona – Tel Aviv (~3,300 km) → €400

The compensation amount is independent of what you paid for the ticket or your booking class.

How to File a Vueling Compensation Claim — Step by Step

Step 1: Collect your documents

Before filing, gather:

  • Flight number (e.g. VY 1234)
  • Date and route of the delayed flight
  • Booking reference (locator — 6 characters)
  • Names and details of all passengers claiming
  • IBAN bank account for payment
  • Boarding pass, e-ticket, or check-in confirmation

Step 2: Submit via Vueling's claim form

Go to the Vueling website and navigate to: Customer Service → Claims → Flight Disruption Compensation. Vueling has an online EC 261 claim form. Fill in all fields and submit. Note the reference number provided.

Step 3: Upload supporting evidence

Attach to your claim:

  • Booking confirmation with locator code
  • Flightradar24 or FlightAware report confirming delay duration
  • Photo of the departure board at the airport (if you took one)

Step 4: Wait for a response

Vueling is legally required to respond within 14 business days. In practice, initial replies often come in 4–8 weeks, and may be templates requesting more information. Keep the reference number and follow up after 6 weeks if you hear nothing.

Why Does Vueling Deny Compensation Claims?

Vueling — like most budget carriers within the IAG group — uses a range of tactics to minimize payouts:

"Extraordinary circumstances" — Vueling frequently cites weather at Barcelona El Prat as the cause, even when the delay originated from a technical issue on a previous sector. Weather at BCN is genuinely variable in summer, but it does not excuse knock-on delays caused by rotational issues.

"Technical issue" — Vueling may frame a technical defect as extraordinary. EU courts require Vueling to prove the defect was hidden and unforeseeable. Standard maintenance issues do not qualify.

Excessive delays in response — Some passengers report waiting 3–6 months for any substantive response from Vueling's customer service. Non-response is not a refusal — it is grounds for escalation.

Offering future flight vouchers — Vueling may propose vouchers or travel credit instead of cash. You are legally entitled to cash under EC 261 and can decline vouchers.

Incorrect delay calculation — Vueling may argue the delay was under 3 hours based on scheduled vs actual block times. Always verify with an independent tracking tool.

What to Do If Vueling Refuses Your Claim

1. AESA (Spain) — Spain's national aviation authority, Agencia Estatal de Seguridad Aérea, is the relevant NEB for Vueling. You can file a complaint at their website for free. Process: 3–12 months.

2. National Enforcement Body in your country — If your flight departed from another EU country, contact the NEB there.

3. European Small Claims Procedure — For cross-border EU claims up to €5,000, this streamlined process is available in all EU member states.

4. AirHelp — Specialists in exactly these situations. Over 10 million passengers helped, including many Vueling cases. AirHelp manages negotiation and legal escalation. No win, no fee — 35% commission on success only. Claim with AirHelp →

5. Spanish consumer courts — Filing in the Juzgado de lo Contencioso-Administrativo in Barcelona or in your local court (OJAM) is another option.

FAQ: Vueling Delayed Flight Compensation

Is Vueling good at paying compensation? Vueling's voluntary payment rate is below average. Many passengers receive initial refusals and need to escalate through AESA or a compensation company to receive what they're owed.

How long does a Vueling compensation claim take? Voluntary resolution: 6–10 weeks. AESA complaint: 6–12 months. AirHelp: typically faster through legal pressure.

My Vueling flight was delayed 2 hours — do I qualify? No. The threshold is 3 hours of arrival delay. At 2 hours, Vueling owes you care (food, drinks, communication), but no financial compensation.

Does Vueling's membership in IAG affect my claim? No — your claim is against Vueling specifically as the operating carrier. IAG group membership does not change liability. British Airways, Iberia, and Vueling are legally separate airlines.

Can I claim for a Vueling flight booked via a travel agency? Yes. Your booking channel does not affect your right to compensation. The claim is against Vueling as the operating airline, regardless of where you purchased the ticket.
