If your Eurowings flight arrived more than 3 hours late, you may be entitled to compensation of up to €600 under EU Regulation EC 261/2004 — regardless of your ticket price. Eurowings is a subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group and one of Germany's largest airlines, carrying millions of passengers each year from its main hubs at Düsseldorf (DUS), Cologne/Bonn (CGN), Stuttgart (STR), and Hamburg (HAM).

Despite being part of the Lufthansa Group, Eurowings is a separate legal entity. This means Eurowings is directly responsible for delays on its own flights, not the parent company. And on codeshare flights with Lufthansa, the key question is always: who is the operating carrier — the airline that actually flies the plane?
When are you entitled to Eurowings compensation?
EC 261/2004 applies when the following conditions are met:
Flight conditions:
- Your flight arrived at its destination 3 hours or more late (measured from the moment the aircraft doors open, not departure time)
- The flight departed from an EU airport — this covers all Eurowings flights from Germany and Europe
- Or the flight was operated by Eurowings (EU-registered) arriving into the EU
Passenger conditions:
- You had a confirmed booking
- You checked in on time (usually 40 minutes before departure)
- You were not travelling on a free or non-publicly available discounted fare
Codeshare flights with Lufthansa: If you bought a Lufthansa ticket but the flight was actually operated by Eurowings (identifiable by an EW flight number), your claim goes to Eurowings. Conversely, if a flight was sold through Eurowings but operated by Lufthansa (LH flight number), Lufthansa is responsible. Always check the operating carrier on your boarding pass.
Eurowings compensation amounts
Compensation is based on flight distance, not the ticket price:
| Flight distance | Compensation |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | €250 |
| 1,500–3,500 km | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | €600 |
Examples of typical Eurowings routes:
- Düsseldorf – Berlin (~480 km) → €250 per passenger
- Cologne/Bonn – Palma de Mallorca (~1,490 km) → €250 per passenger
- Stuttgart – Antalya (~2,340 km) → €400 per passenger
- Hamburg – Crete (Heraklion) (~2,470 km) → €400 per passenger
- Düsseldorf – Windhoek (Eurowings Discover, ~8,900 km) → €600 per passenger
Eurowings Discover: The long-haul subsidiary operates from Frankfurt under its own AOC. Flights to the Caribbean, Africa, or North America qualify for the highest compensation tier of €600.

How to claim Eurowings compensation — step by step
Step 1: Check your eligibility
Confirm the following:
- Did your flight arrive 3+ hours late?
- Was the cause within Eurowings' control (not extreme weather or ATC strikes)?
- Did the flight depart from an EU airport?
Step 2: Gather your documents
Prepare:
- Booking reference (PNR — 6 characters)
- Flight number (e.g. EW 9876)
- Boarding pass or e-ticket confirmation
- Proof of actual arrival time (Flightradar24, FlightAware)
- Bank account details (IBAN)
Step 3: Submit your claim to Eurowings
Go to eurowings.com → Service → Flight irregularities → Submit compensation claim. Complete the online form and save the confirmation number.
Step 4: Wait for a response
Expect a response within 4–10 weeks. If no reply arrives or the claim is rejected, escalate.
Common excuses Eurowings uses to refuse claims
1. "Extraordinary circumstances" The most common defence. Eurowings cites weather, air traffic control restrictions, or security incidents. Check critically: was the weather really that bad? Often, delays from previous flights in the rotation are the real cause — and those do not qualify as extraordinary.
2. "Technical fault" Eurowings may argue that technical problems were unforeseeable. EU courts have ruled repeatedly (Wallentin-Hermann, 2008) that routine technical faults are the airline's operational responsibility and do not exempt them from paying.
3. Codeshare confusion Eurowings may redirect passengers with Lufthansa tickets to Lufthansa and vice versa. What matters is always the operating airline — check the flight number on your boarding pass.
4. Bureaucratic delay No response after weeks? Don't give up. Set a 14-day deadline by email, then escalate.
What if Eurowings offers vouchers instead of money?
Eurowings sometimes offers flight vouchers instead of cash. Key points:
- You are not obligated to accept a voucher
- EC 261/2004 guarantees your right to cash payment
- Vouchers often have restrictions (expiry dates, limited routes)
- Accepting a voucher typically means waiving further claims
Insist in writing on your right to cash compensation under EC 261/2004.
What to do if Eurowings rejects your claim
1. söp (German arbitration board) The Schlichtungsstelle für den öffentlichen Personenverkehr offers free mediation. Eurowings participates in söp.
2. National enforcement body In Germany, the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA) handles complaints. Free to file, but processing takes 6–18 months.
3. AirHelp The world's leading flight compensation company has helped over 10 million passengers. AirHelp handles everything — claim submission, airline negotiations, and court proceedings if needed. Only 35% commission on success — no win, no fee. Success rates for Eurowings cases are high, as many rejections don't hold up legally.
4. Small claims court As a last resort, file a claim in your local court. For amounts under €5,000, no lawyer is required in Germany.

FAQ: Eurowings flight delay compensation
Does Eurowings pay compensation voluntarily? Rarely. Eurowings frequently rejects initial claims citing extraordinary circumstances. Many passengers only receive their compensation after escalating through söp or AirHelp.
How long does it take to receive Eurowings compensation? Direct payment: 4–10 weeks. Via söp: 3–6 months. Via AirHelp: 2–6 months.
My Eurowings flight was a codeshare with Lufthansa — who pays? Always the operating carrier. If the flight number starts with EW → Eurowings. If it starts with LH → Lufthansa. This applies regardless of where you booked.
Is Eurowings Discover a separate airline? Yes. Eurowings Discover holds its own Air Operator Certificate (AOC) and is a separate legal entity. Claims for delays on Eurowings Discover flights go directly to Eurowings Discover.
How far back can I claim Eurowings compensation? In Germany, the limitation period is 3 years from the flight date. In other EU countries, it ranges from 2 to 6 years. Don't delay — evidence is easier to gather soon after the flight.
